Brian Fertig b8e537787d Add Zenith faction roster with wing-volley and electrified-zone archetyp
- 8 new enemy types (frames 50–57) split 4/4: combo seekers fire flank-angle homing missiles with capped turn-rate; elementals throw darts that bloom into growing, damage-ticking electrified zones
- Balance follows the faction rule (2× damage, 3.5× armor vs pirate raider), documented in combat.json comments
- New `flank_barrage` and `shock_dart` abilities in EnemyAbilities.js with shared `stepShock` frame step wired into CombatSystem.update
- Generalized `_combatBootMode` to accept any id from `factionIds()` so new factions need no code change
- Painted frames 50–57 in ships-enemy.png/.psd; added capital-mindweave-surface-01 reference art
- Tests: dev/zenith.test.mjs (Node), dev/zenith-arena-browser.mjs (Playwright), updated combat.test.mjs roster and sheet-art checks, extended cdp-faction-arena.mjs with zenith tab

Brian Fertig 8cce093a79 Add 16 elite faction fighters with a duel arena and skill layer
- Register 8 Apex (frames 30-37) and 8 Mindweave (frames 40-47) in
data/combat.json enemyTypes at 2x damage / 3.5x armor vs the pirate,
each with a distinct weapon pattern and ability kit
- New shared skill layer (js/combat/EnemyAbilities.js): cloaked ambush,
  flank strafe, blink reposition, illusion decoys, telekinetic waves;
wired into CombatSystem update/collide with cloak gating on fire,
  targeting, and player skills
- Add sweep/spiral/shell weapon patterns in js/combat/Weapons.js
- New ?combat=apex / ?combat=mindweave duel arena with an in-game
DuelPicker (keys 1-8 / click, 0 = whole pack); plain ?combat demo
  unchanged
- Paint the 16 missing spritesheet frames (ships-enemy.png) so the
fighters are visible; add a PNG alpha regression test guarding against
  blank cells
- Add dev/cdp-faction-arena.mjs CDP smoke check and extend
dev/combat.test.mjs with faction roster, balance, ability, duel, and
  sheet-pixel checks

Brian Fertig aca351b035 Persist combat vitals in save data and restore damage on load
- Capture hull/shields/energy from the live CombatSystem into record.combat on save
- Stage `combatVitals` in prepareLoad so a panel load restores the damage the run was flying with (clamped, hull floored at 1) instead of always starting full
- Add `repairFull()` to CombatSystem and call it on world landing (startLanding) so the dock heals the ship
- Set `combatRepair` flag in jumpThroughGate's record so a system arrival also triggers a full repair, while panel loads never carry it
- Clear both staged values in resetRunState for fresh runs
- Carry `cargoCosts` through jump records to preserve per-bay pricing across systems

Brian Fertig a5f69f3221 Add Inferno and Nanobots skills to the Vanguard tree
- Inferno (Offense, seat 2): flame arcs home on the nearest 2 hostiles
  (3 from rank 4) and ignite a burn that ticks on the combat loop's clock;
scales in duration and per-tick damage with rank.
- Nanobots (Passive, no seat): mends 1% of max hull every 2s per point;
  a full hull banks nothing.
- Wire flameArc + hullRegen effect handlers in SkillEffects.js and the
  arc/burn/step logic in CombatSystem.js.
- Add firstPassiveOf() / hullRegen() to the skill ledger so the combat
loop can read the mend's interval and color off the ranked def.
- Update icon sheet, dev shots, and the browser/combat/data test suites for
  the two new skills.

Brian Fertig 8a85ec9fff Tune level-6+ encounters and bounty tiers with weighted rosters and XP s
- Combat bands split at level 6 (5–7), 9–12, and 13+ (9–12 cap) with
weighted pirate rosters; compose() now draws `pirateTypes` from the band
roster and GameScene uses it when spawning one-shots.
- Patrol encounters gain tiered bands (levels 6+) with mixed rosters,
fatter rolling waves (up to 20 deep / 6 concurrent), contact-count odds
overrides, and per-tier `xpScale` dials; legacy array rosters normalize
  to the weighted table.
- Bounty hunts replace the stubbed marksman band with tuned tiers
(marksman 6–10, deadeye 11–14, apex 15+): growing pickets and escorts,
escort roster mixes, elite armor/damage scales 3×–4×, and `xpScale`
trims so payout pace tracks the curve.
- Tests updated to assert the new band shapes, roster draws, XP scaling,
and tier resolution; skills-bar screenshots refreshed.

Brian Fertig a28aa6f7fa Add stun visual read to Boleadoras-strung enemies
- Strung hostiles dim to the data's fx.stunAlpha and show a crackling discharge (Fx.stunArms) while the snare holds, then recover with a release beat when the stun expires or on kill/revive
- Add Fx.stunArms/killStunArms + jagBolt helpers for the per-frame discharge (jagged bolts, sparks, hull stutters) tied to the snare's clock
- Store per-craft stun color/alpha from the bola catch and drive hold/release via _stunHoldFrame/_stunRelease in CombatSystem
- Add dev/stun-shot.mjs CDP script + screenshots, extend combat tests for dim/discharge/release, bump skills-bar test timeout, reformat skills.json, refresh toxic-land video

Brian Fertig 12d6867eae Add Wraith skills: Boleadoras snare and Blink decoy escape
- Define both skills in data/skills.json with energy, cooldown, ranks, seats,
  and per-rank stun/decoy durations
- Implement projectile flight, target intercept, capture radius, and stun in
CombatSystem (launchBoleadoras / _stepBoleadoras / _snagBola)
- Implement Blink: spawn a decoy sprite at the old position, teleport the
hull to a random visible-screen point, and let the decoy absorb aggro and
enemy bolts until its clock expires
- Add bola orb/string visuals and snag readout in Fx.js (bolaStart/Step/Stop,
  snag)
- Register new combat SFX events (bola_snag, blink) in CombatSfx.js
- Extend SkillEffects with stunMs/decoyMs helpers and boleadoras/blink handlers
- Update tests: Wraith model checks, Boleadoras/Blink combat behavior, decoy
  aggro/fizzle, and SFX event roster

Brian Fertig 602eaf0c9e Polish Ramming Charge FX with fire textures and SCREEN blend
- Add canvas-drawn comet head, arrival fireball, and damage-radius ring textures in Fx.js, replacing the old single-dot streak/ring combo
- Switch all ram-related (and general glow) sprites from ADD to SCREEN blend to fix the "dark box" artifact over semi-transparent nebula backgrounds
- Introduce ember trail particles that linger ~1 s behind the hull during the dash, plus a flickering comet head that rides the ship and is released on impact
- Add `ramBlast()` impact sequence: ignition flash, blooming fireball, exact damage-radius ring, shock ripples, and debris sparks
- Wire in the heaviest camera shake beat (`ram`) and layer the data's sfxEvent under a thunder boom at impact
- Bump skill fx `ringLifeMs` to 480 so the damage-radius ring lingers long enough to read
- Add dev CDP harnesses (`cdp.mjs`, `ram-shot.mjs`, `ram-video.mjs`) and reference stills/video for the charge's three key frames

Brian Fertig 51fc62ec66 Add skill layer: data-driven Skill Tree, combat bar seats, and two Vangu
- New `data/skills.json` (registered in manifest) owns every number/string for the
  per-class skill trees, type taxonomy, seat table, bar look, and window copy;
code only reads behavior off it so adding a third skill is a data edit.
- Pure skill model + ledger (`js/skills/SkillModel.js`, `SkillState.js`): rank
points from the class bank, spend-through-unlock edges, seat bindings, save
round-trip via `record.playerSkills` (old saves load as an empty ledger).
- Combat runtime in `CombatSystem.js`: cast pipeline with per-skill recharge
clocks, energy spend/regen (now on by default), Ramming Charge dash + arrival
blast (4x..12x weapon damage by rank), Reinforced Plating hull pool re-rolled
from base so it never compounds; charge passes through the pack and settles once.
- UI: full-screen Skill Tree console (`js/ui/SkillWindow.js`) opened from the ship
console's SKILL TREE door (lit when the class owns a tree), combat bar seats draw
  icon/rank/cooldown/affordability states with click-to-assign and right-click clear,
  keys 1-8 cast or place.
- Evidence: new Node + Playwright suites (`skills.test.mjs`, `skills-combat.test.mjs`,
  `skills-bar-browser.test.mjs`, `skills-window-browser.test.mjs`,
`skills-devdoor-browser.test.mjs`) plus screenshots in `dev/shots/`; README and
PROJECT_NOTES document the layer and dev doors (`?skill`, `?skilltree`).

Brian Fertig 2ede7cb160 Add level-5 class selection with Vanguard and Wraith bonuses
- Introduce data/classes.json as the single source for roster, copy, accents, icon frames, perk numbers, and console chrome
- Add ClassModel (pure reads), ClassState (idempotent run ledger + save round-trip), and Aiming (intercept solve + barrel geometry) so perks are testable without Phaser
- Wire CombatSystem to the class ledger: Vanguard dual-cannon volley, Wraith predictive aim with a max-lead fallback to raw aim; cooldown unchanged
- Add full-screen ClassWindow console over the frozen GameScene (looping muted feed, Trestle briefing, themed tabs, PICK confirm), opened once at level 5 when combat is quiet or via the ship console door / ?level5 dev param
- Persist record.playerClass in saves and clear it on New Game; ship console now shows a class plate with crest + banked skill points instead of the choose-class door

Brian Fertig 0a53931f16 Add Escort side quest: convoy rendezvous, elevated lane combat, and rese
- New "Escort" contract type on neutral job boards (minLevel 3): the player
links a persistent transport + 1-2 escort fighters at a local waypoint,
flies them through a seeded 1-2 hop gate route to a planet/station, and
  delivers with the sky clear.
- TransportShip extends NeutralShip with a lapsed break-off window and a
`persistent` flag so CombatSystem's active/neutralOnly gates skip it; the
convoy never holds the jump gate or landing door open.
- Dedicated escort EncounterDirector (9-18s rolls, 85-100% chance) fires
mixed-fighter waves ~5x more frequently than normal encounters; one wave at
a time via the patrol contact's law.
- Transport loss fails the contract; landing on a planet resets it with a
fresh rendezvous in the current system and full-armor transport, same
  destination.
- 20 unique escort dossier descriptions, reward band raised to 120-175 CR.
- Three new test suites: escort.test.mjs (model), escort-flow.test.mjs
(scene flow), escort-browser.test.mjs (real browser boot + board render).

Brian Fertig 6f77ada8ad Gate random encounters on the 'Special Delivery' quest claim
- Add `_encountersLockedByQuest()` to GameScene: while the delivery
chain is live (not yet completed AND claimed), keep the encounter
director from rolling. Quests disabled = gate off too.
- AND the new scene-side hold into `encounters.update`'s `allowed` so
the pure clock stays untouched; document the contract in Encounters.js.
- Ship new transport sprite assets (ships-transport.png/.psd).
2026-09-22 20:48:22 -06:00
Brian Fertig 81a1589307 Add neutral-only encounter comms and soundtrack
- Introduce a NEUTRAL-ONLY encounter path: when escorts are live with zero hostiles, the combat seam now carries a `neutral` flag so the scene can swap to a dedicated neutral hum instead of the combat shuffle.
- Fire two new pilot comms once per neutral encounter — `neutralScan` (pilot on screen) and `neutralScanComplete` (first pilot break-off) — via a new `onComm` seam in CombatSystem; hostile-only beats stay silent during neutral encounters.
- Add `neutral` music context to data/music.json with its own shuffle playlist, load it in GameScene, and resume the correct context on wake.
- Ship a `?neutral` dev boot (two pilots, 8 s escort window) for testing the full beat at home, plus tests covering the comm seam, mixed→neutral re-resolution, and data validation.
2026-09-22 20:12:41 -06:00
Brian Fertig fededdf590 Fix combat end seam so break-off cull fires onActiveChange
- The last escort leaving the screen (encounter over without a kill) now calls `_setActive()`, which flips `active` to false and emits `onActiveChange`.
- Previously only kills triggered the flip, so GameScene's deck/soundtrack swap (`_setCombatBar`) never ran on a break-off ending.
- Add a test asserting the `true→false` active flip when the last escort is culled off-screen.
2026-09-22 17:52:06 -06:00
Brian Fertig 2f80ddfdb1 Add periodic random ship encounters with neutral ally escorts
- New EncounterDirector (js/combat/Encounters.js): pure, data-driven clock that rolls pirate / neutral / mixed encounters in neutral non-home systems on a ~45–90s interval at 50–60% chance, one at a time with a 30–60s cooldown, never during a live wave run or on a downed player.
- Neutral ally ships (js/combat/NeutralShip.js) on spritesheet frames 20–27: escort the player for a per-ship 10–15s window, engage the nearest pirate in mixed fights, then break off and fly off-screen; player-safe by construction (never targeted or damaged by ally bolts/seekers).
- Pirate targeting generalized so hostiles can draw aggro onto escorts when the player is out of range; escort and pirate bolts/missiles collide with each other but not the player.
- Group size scales with combat level (1–2 low → 4–5 high, bands in data/combat.json); encounter hostiles are one-shots so the fight ends when the sky clears.
- New 'volley' weapon pattern (wide staggered-speed fan) and owner-tagged bolts/missiles for ally vs enemy routing in Weapons.js.
- Neutral roster config + encounters section added to data/combat.json; EnemyTypes gains neutralTypeConfig/Ids/SheetList.
- Tests: dev/encounters.test.mjs (cadence, gate, weights, size bands), dev/neutral.test.mjs (roster, escort AI, targeting, no friendly fire), plus combat/xp test updates; CDP probes and encounter-hud-check for in-browser HUD verification.

Brian Fertig 5e799bbd5a Add pirate comms: attack/defeat/bounty voice lines with speech and video
- Raiders now roll an attack comm on-screen (50%) or on rolling-wave arrival (20%), and a defeat comm on kill (20%), driven by per-type config in combat.json
- New bounty-attack comm fires when the wanted leader's fight stands up in GameScene._fireBountyEngagements
- Ship 12 pirate speech clips, 3 enemy video clips, and register three new senders (pirate, pirate_defeat, pirate_bounty) in comms.json
- Wire onComm seam through CombatSystem so the scene can arm CommsHub triggers; rolls are no-ops when the seam is absent
- Add combat, bounty-hunt, and comms test coverage for the new roll logic, trigger arming, asset presence, and roster count
2026-09-20 21:34:05 -06:00
Brian Fertig 4312177c3d Add BOUNTY HUNT side quest with elite combat seam and verification
- Enable the `bounty` category in data/sidequests.json with level-2 gate,
Neutral-only contexts, encounter chain odds, and 20 written leader dossiers
- Add pure bounty model to SideQuests.js: plan derivation, wave scripts, XP,
sequential waypoint rule, and completion only via the mark's kill
- Extend combat seam (Waves/CombatSystem/EnemyShip) for a named elite unit
deployed with the opening group at scaled hull/damage, plus haltWaves() so
killing the mark stops deployments while survivors stay hostile
- Wire GameScene/SurfaceScene/JobBoardWindow for locked rows, dossier readout,
sequential check-ins, engagement chain, and single idempotent claim
- Add dev/bounty-hunts.test.mjs (591 checks) and in-browser probe with JSON/PNG
evidence; update patrol/sidequests tests for the new live category
2026-09-20 20:10:07 -06:00
Brian Fertig 69ce598f6c Add seven enemy weapon patterns and a rolling ?combat demo wave sequence
- New hostiles frames 1–7 (bomber → warden) with distinct stats and
  monotonic difficulty ramp in data/combat.json
- Shared js/combat/Weapons.js dispatch for lance, spray, burst, rapid,
ring, missile, and combo patterns used by both combat contexts
- New dodgeable heat-seeking Missile (capped turn-rate homing) plus pure
  geometry helpers in Combat.js
- Rewire ?combat boot to startWaves('combat_demo'): 7 rolling waves, one
type each, 6 ships per wave, 3 concurrent, replacement per kill
- Add missile_fire SFX voice and extend tests/CDP demo checks for all
patterns and the full wave run
2026-09-20 08:17:34 -06:00
Brian Fertig 658babe216 Add XP rewards for sidequest patrols and cargo sale profit
- Sidequest patrol contracts now pay an XP reward alongside credits, fixed at accept as the experience worth of defeated contacts (contacts × wave total × roster xp) and granted via XpManager with a 'sidequest' source tag on claim
- Cargo sales earn 1 XP per credit above each bay's recorded purchase cost; bays with no cost basis or sold at/below cost earn nothing, granted via the same pipe with a 'trade' source tag
- New CargoHold.costsFor() returns FIFO per-bay costs for the profit basis without mutating the hold
- Job board payout/claim lines and console toasts display both credits and XP when present; old saves without an xp field derive it from the encounters spec or fall back to 0

Brian Fertig 0bd93369a5 Use dedicated combat SFX voices for cannon, hit, and enemy laser
- Split the shared `fire` event into `cannon_fire`, `cannon_hit`, and `fire` so each weapon gets its own distinct voice
- Add three new sound assets (combat-mass-cannon, combat-mass-cannon-hit, combat-laser) to data/sfx.json and load them in GameScene
- Remove the 0.45 volume multiplier on enemy fire; the laser now plays at full volume since it has its own voice
- Update CombatSfx event map, both combat contexts (CombatScene, CombatSystem), dev tests, and README to reflect the ten-event SFX set
2026-09-19 19:07:50 -06:00
Brian Fertig 0cf859363c Halve XP curve base from 100 to 50 for faster early leveling
- Level 1 now costs 5 kills of the base craft instead of 10
- Total XP to reach level 80 drops from ~17.4M to ~8.7M
- Update XpManager default, progression data, tests, and README to match
2026-09-19 12:07:18 -06:00
Brian Fertig b461bc98af Add combat XP leveling: kills earn XP, level-ups bump armor
- Kills grant the hostile type's own `xp` (the roster sets XP-per-threat;
  the curve lives in data/progression.json, 100 x n^2, capped at level 80)
- Each crossed level fires one `levelup` event: +3 hull / +2 shields with
a full heal, cyan burst + a distinct voice, and a kill-feed line — the
placeholder toughness the skill layer will subscribe to later
- Combat bar gains an XP row below the orbs (level, live gold fill,
banked / next cost; hidden when the snapshot carries no xp, so the
range bar keeps its old face)
- Kills show a gold "+N" reward floater; the level-up's SFX is the new
  8th combat event (solar_flare_01)
- XpManager is pure and tested headless (node dev/xp.test.mjs); the
ledger saves as { level, xp } and old saves load fresh at level 0
- dev hooks (xp/grantXp), sfxcheck (range seven, main eight), shot
captures, and README all follow along
2026-09-18 09:57:07 -06:00
Brian Fertig 5890e93cde Enforce on-screen rule for combat engagement and hits
- Add inView() pure geometry helper to test if a craft's visual circle is at least partly within the camera's visible rect
- Gate enemy fire, auto-fire target selection, currentTarget lock, and bullet collision checks behind craftVisible() so off-screen hostiles hold lances, can't be engaged, and are immune to tracers until they fly into view
- Extend pickTarget() with an optional qualifies predicate to narrow the candidate pool (used for the on-screen rule)
- Document the rule in data/combat.json and CombatSystem class comments

Brian Fertig 63bb6508bb Fix white-flash sticking bug with overlap guard and periodic tint purge
- Prevent overlapping hit flashes from stacking, which captured the in-flash
state as the restore value and left crafts permanently white
- Track flashed crafts in a Set so the expiry path can always settle them
- Add purgeCraftTints(), called every ~250 ms from update(), that re-asserts
normal colors on any craft (tracked or roster) not holding a live flash
- Wire purgeRoster in both CombatScene and CombatSystem so the purge covers
the full player + enemy pack, not just Fx's own flashes
- Prune destroyed crafts from the tracking set to avoid leaked references
- Add tests covering overlap extension, kill-seam settle, periodic purge,
  roster coverage, and dead-craft pruning
2026-09-17 16:50:33 -06:00
Brian Fertig db75222ca2 Fix enemy ships reviving with stuck white hit-flash tint
- Add Fx.releaseCraft() to settle a craft's pending white tintFlash
immediately on kill/destroy, so sprites never die mid-flash
- Add exported settleCraftTint() helper that resets tint mode and tint
to identity; call it on revive (EnemyShip), respawn, and reuse seams
- Guard restore callbacks against destroyed sprites with try/catch so a
half-restored craft can't leak white state
- Update combat screenshots
2026-09-17 08:13:47 -06:00
Brian Fertig 716f9270ae Overhaul combat FX: laser bolts, impact reads, shield-sphere strike, and
- Replace dot tracers with elongated glowing bolts (trail band + core streak + head bloom)
and a directional muzzle flare in both the range and main-game contexts.
- Add enemy impact reads: core flash, directional sparks along the travel vector,
cyan arc ripple on shield hits vs orange shards on hull hits, white craft hit-flash,
  and a polished damage-number pop.
- Add player shield-sphere strike effect: full-sphere outline + bright arc centered on
the laser's incoming bearing, radial ripple, spark burst, and a shield-collapse cue
  when shields break to hull.
- Add subtle world-camera shake on player hits, enemy kills, and shield-break while
keeping the HUD/combat bar perfectly still via the fx-ui camera split.
- Expose new visual knobs (bolt size/trail, muzzle, arc span, shake intensity) in
data/combat.json; fix Fx.update destroying ships on tintFlash expiry.
2026-09-17 07:55:48 -06:00
Brian Fertig 28fdfdb741 Simplify pirate ambush spawn to off-screen around player
- Remove the gate-to-capital midpoint origin logic (_pirateAmbushOrigin) and
the startWaves opts.origin seam; wave ships now materialize off-screen
around the player from a random direction, matching the ?combat pack.
- Update combat.json, comms.json, quests.json comments to reflect the new
spawn behavior (off-screen around player, streaming in on chase AI).
2026-09-16 20:35:03 -06:00
Brian Fertig 78b280d7db Add 'Pirate Problems' quest with combat ambush and save-state ledgers
- New main-story quest granted after 'Special Delivery' is claimed AND its payoff comms are ACKed all the way through (unlocks.acked gate)
- Three-step checklist: speak with Trestle (trestleQ4 warning beats), defend from a rolling wave of six raiders at the gate-to-capital midpoint, return to the Neutral Capital World
- CombatSystem.startWaves gains an origin option so ambush enemies materialize in a ring around a specified point rather than off-screen around the ship
- CommsHub fires a new onAck hook before onEnd so the scene can record acknowledgments and run its grant pass in the same tick
- QuestState.isUnlockMet / grantUnlocked accept a gates.acked set; GameScene supplies it from the comms acked-ledger
- SaveData captures/restores comms.acked, combat.done, and story.capitalReturned; resetRunState clears all three on New Game
- Combat is now built for every scene (not just ?combat demo); the hostile pack spawns only in the sandbox boot
- Test suites updated: quest unlock gating, ambush wave shape, roster count 25→28, save round-trip of new ledgers
2026-09-16 20:15:21 -06:00
Brian Fertig c352e089e8 Rework combat bar into bottom-centered orb strip
- Replace vertical gauges with draining hull/shield/energy orbs
(hull with overlapping shield on the left, energy on the right).
- Share the main game's CombatBar in the combat range and add
range energy tracking with optional regen.
- Make gauge hit flashes shape-aware: circle orbs get a soft bloom,
rects keep the legacy white pulse.
- Update combat data and assets for the new orb-strip storyboard.
2026-09-16 16:14:35 -06:00
Brian Fertig 11f315dbf0 Add enemy wave scripts, typed hostiles, and off-screen spawns
- Waves.js: pure wave runner (rolling/fixed) + CombatSystem.startWaves
for quest-step combat; named scripts (probe/skirmish/raid) ship in
combat.json, driven from the console until the quest hook lands
- EnemyTypes.js: named hostiles (raider/bomber) deep-merged onto the
base craft, with per-type textures preloaded via enemySheetList()
- Hostiles now materialize off-screen (camera edge + game.spawnLead)
and fly in on their chase AI instead of popping into view mid-fight
- Wave ships are run-owned: no self-respawn, kills feed rolling
replacements, and the combat bar stays up through the lead and gaps
2026-09-16 15:20:53 -06:00
Brian Fertig 0d51184daa Readability layer: lock reticle, threat cues, off-screen arrows, kill feed, bar gauge flash
A shared readability layer (js/combat/CombatHud.js) for both combat
contexts — the training range and the main game's ?combat:

- Target/lock indicator: rotating brackets on the current target (the
auto-fire target — one rule, one target, js/combat/Combat.js#pickTarget).
- Threat cues: pulsing markers above each live hostile.
- Off-screen arrows: edge arrows toward hostiles outside the camera
  (zoom-aware via a context-supplied worldToScreen).
- Kill feed: newest-first fading entries, top-right.
- Gauge flash: the combat bar's shields/hull gauge flashes on the hit
it took (CombatBar.gaugeRect feeds the shared CombatHud.flash).

Pure rules stay in Combat.js (pickTarget, feedPush, offscreenArrow),
covered by dev/combat.test.mjs. The main game re-anchors the pack
around the ship once its start position settles (CombatSystem
.resyncAroundShip + a short settle window in GameScene), so the demo
pack sits in auto-fire range instead of kilometers off.

All combat rules tests pass (0 failures); CDP-verified in both
/combat and index.html?combat.

Brian Fertig ecff203159 Feedback VFX pass: damage numbers, color-coded hit flashes, kill burst, down/respawn cues
All from the one shared Fx path (js/combat/Fx.js) — both contexts call
the same cues, so the read never drifts:

- Fx.damage(): floating damage numbers on every hit, cyan when the
shields took it / orange when the armor did (both enemy + player).
- Hit flashes are now color-coded by the layer that took the hit
(FX_COLORS.shield / .hull) instead of a flat white.
- Fx.explode() (the kill burst) gains a second delayed shockwave ring
  + a denser spark burst.
- Fx.down(): the player-DOWN cue — hot-red burst + big DOWN hold.
- Fx.respawn(): the REFORMED cue — clean cyan bloom + pop.
- Fx.text() is a graceful no-op without scene.add.text (the Node test
stubs), and canvas text gets a CSS string (toCss) per the v4 Giedi
  fillStyle quirk.

CombatScene + CombatSystem wire every hit/kill/down/respawn site to the
shared cues. dev/combat.test.mjs stays 0 failures; CDP screenshots
(/tmp/vfx-cues-*.png) show the damage numbers, kill burst, DOWN and
REFORMED cues live in both /combat and index.html?combat.

Brian Fertig 8fd94ce48c Combat SFX layer: seven distinct event voices, shared across both contexts
- js/combat/CombatSfx.js (new): ONE event→voice map + playback path for
both contexts, using ONLY existing data/sfx.json files:
    fire=scan · impact=ui_click · shield=solar_buzz · hull=mining_split
    kill=thunder_01..04 (one at random) · down=deconstruct ·
    respawn=discovery
plus combatSfxEnemyHit() (shield/hull decision in one place: a hit
that breaks through to the hull plays both — the shield-pop read),
loadCombatSfx() for the range's preload (the main game already loads
all of sfx.json), and a capped dev log on window.__COMBAT_SFX__ so
the wiring is verifiable headless (no audio manager) in both.
- js/combat/CombatScene.js: fire/enemy-fire/wall-clip/ram/lance/kill/
down/respawn sites call the shared path; the player-hit voices
(impact + shield/hull from applyDamage) funnel through damagePlayer.
- js/combat/CombatSystem.js: the same seven call sites, identical
  wiring (no per-context copies).
- dev/combat.test.mjs: sfx block — seven events mapped, voices exist in
data/sfx.json, pairwise distinct, vol scaling, thunder pick, the
shield/hull decision, the dev log, the master switch (0 failures).
- dev/combat.sfxcheck.mjs (new): CDP check that drives real events in
/combat AND index.html?combat and asserts all seven events pass
through the shared path — PASS in both.

Brian Fertig 5949bac861 Sharpen range flight feel: smoothed turn, ramped throttle, instant brake
- js/combat/Combat.js: new pure handleFeel() step (smoothed turn
velocity, ramped/decaying throttle, instant brake) with EXACT
analytic integration of the eased turn — frame-rate independent by
construction (dev/combat.test.mjs: feel block, 0 failures).
- data/combat.json: combat.player tuning surface — thrust 2000, drag
1.8 (now actually overrides ship.drag in the range), rotSpeed 6.4,
  rotApproach 20, thrustRamp 18, thrustDecay 30, brake 0.9.
- js/combat/CombatScene.js: updatePlayer runs the shared feel step.
ALSO FIXES WASD: this Phaser build's addKeys() object form only
resolves single KeyCodes names, so {up:'W,UP',...} put every name on
ONE shared Key with keyCode undefined and isDown polling could never
see a key-press (WASD was dead). Now keys drive off the working
keydown-/keyup- event API (the main game's pattern) with real Key
objects registered for capture; window-blur clears held keys.
- dev/combat-flycheck.mjs: CDP flight-feel check — thrust 60% in ~300
ms, 30° turn in ~150 ms, sustained spin ≥ rotSpeed, stop from full
in ~300 ms (headless ~24 fps budgets; PASS).

Brian Fertig 1d0622a3d5 Integrate combat into the main game with auto-fire and a combat bar
- Add CombatSystem: owns the hostile pack, tracers, player armor/energy,
  auto-fire (nearest-in-range), swept-hit collisions, rams, respawn — all
  driven by data/combat.json `game.*` / `energy` sections
- Add CombatBar (Diablo 4 style): vertical shields + hull gauges on the
left, energy gauge on the right, eight skill seats (keys 1–8) in the
middle; shown in place of the action deck while combat is live
- `?combat` now boots the normal game with the pack spawning when the
player starts (mouse steers, cannon auto-fires); the standalone WASD
  range remains at `/combat` / `combat.html`
- GameScene wires the system into its update loop, solid constraints, and
click-through gate; exposes `window.__ORBIT_COMBAT__` for DevTools
- Extend combat tests to cover CombatSystem lifecycle (spawn, auto-fire,
hits, rams, armor, respawn, cast stub, destroy)

Brian Fertig 15fe08a926 Add combat sandbox: standalone arena to tune combat before it ships
- New `combat.html` + `/combat` dev-server route + `index.html?combat`
  boot a fixed arena where the player ship fights a pack of enemy craft;
all tuning lives in `data/combat.json` (thrust, hulls, shields, lance,
  rams, respawns).
- Add `js/combat/` modules: CombatScene, EnemyShip (standoff-ring AI +
lance), Bullet, Fx, StarDrift, and pure rules in Combat.js (armor
damage, orbit step) exercised by the new `dev/combat.test.mjs`.
- Extract shared `awaitFonts` into `js/utils/Fonts.js` so both the game
and sandbox boots use one copy.
- Preload the enemy spritesheet in GameScene so the texture is ready when
combat ships in; add `ships-enemy.png` (+ `.psd`) art.
- Expose `window.__COMBAT__` (reset, spawnEnemy, player, kills) for
devtools tuning; R resets the range, P freezes it.
